Volunteer Feature: Suzanne Young

I recognized early on in my life that sitting still was not my style or, as many former teachers of mine would attest,  my strong suit.  Being active is integral to who I am and when I discover a cause, a program or a non-profit that appeals to me, I want to be involved so I can contribute to its success and encourage others to participate.  Volunteering at the UVAC fulfills that need as well as keeping me faithful to my own fitness program.

As a volunteer at the UVAC, I have thoroughly enjoyed renewing old friendships and making new ones.  However, the greatest benefit has probably been the motivation and inspiration derived from watching the staff and other members work out on a regular basis.

In 2015, I retired from Dartmouth College after 30 years as an alumni relations specialist.  Ironically, one of my primary responsibilities was to manage hundreds of alumni volunteers.  In addition to the UVAC, I am also a volunteer member of the American Red Cross Disaster Action Team of the Upper Valley.  In that capacity, I’m often called out to local fires to support the first responders and those impacted by the event.  When possible, I also deploy to national disasters such as Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurrican Michael in Florida which is a very fulfilling, exhausting yet humbling experience.

Fun Facts:

  • I graduated from Dartmouth College cum laude in 1977 in the second class of women to matriculate.
  • I have a motorcycle license but no motorcycle (I had to get it to drive my Vespa!)
  • My oldest son, Matthew, is Director of Customer Service at the UVAC.
